Visiting Journalists Programme

For approximately 20 years, the United Nations Association of Rochester has coordinated a weekend with the UN where foreign journalists visit Rochester through the Visiting Journalists Programme. This year, nine countries are represented: Cape Verde, Mali, Mauritania, Panama, Rwanda, Seychelles, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Tuvalu, and the Ukraine.

While in Rochester, the visiting journalists stay with area host families and participate in their daily routines. One of the experiences appreciated by both the families and their guests are the many discussions on customs, beliefs, perceptions, and social trends with no apprehension of a chiding or disapproval. The journalists also are able to enjoy trips to area attractions, often including a Canal Boat ride, visits to the George Eastman House and Niagara Falls.

On Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, the Visiting Journalists will participate in a Breakfast Conference from 8:00 to Noon, in which the public will be offered the opportunity to interact with them and to share experiences around the topic of "Press Freedom: A Global Crisis." The Honorable Louise Slaughter will convene the conference, and Maidstone Mulenga, Global Editor of the Democrat & Chronicle, will offer a keynote address. Information on registering for this event is found on the Home Page.

The Visiting Journalist Programme provides the Rochester area a valuable glimpse into many hard-to-reach places around the world and is a great experience for everyone.
