Visiting Journalist Programme

For approximately 20 years, the United Nations Association of Rochester has coordinated a weekend with the UN where foreign journalists visit Rochester through the Visiting Journalist Programme. This year, eight countries were represented: Gabon, South Africa, Israel, Somalia, Turkey, Brazil, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Jordan.

While in Rochester, the visiting journalists stay with area host families and participate in their daily routines. One of the experiences appreciated by both the families and their guests are the many discussions on customs, beliefs, perceptions, and social trends with no apprehension of a chiding or disapproval.

At the end of the weekend, the journalists and their host families are recognized at a dinner event open to the public. At this event, each journalist gives a brief presentation about their home country and what is like to be a journalist there. The Visiting Journalist Programme provides the Rochester area a valuable outlook in many hard-to-reach places around the world and is a great experience for everyone.
