What is Model United Nations?

Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly held in New York City. Model UN students become delegates representing member states and participate in debates, speeches, negotiations, and write resolutions. They resolve conflicts and vote for the best interest of the state they are representing. Model UN clubs meet all over the United States. UNAR hosts a Model UN Conference each March in Rochester, NY.

Model UN 50-50 History

Model UN students that had been attending and competing in the Conferences began noticing a decline in attendance of schools and clubs that they had previously competed against. Budget cuts were affecting so many programs that it became difficult for many clubs and individuals to make the financial commitment of attending the Model UN Conference. These students decided that they wanted to do something to change that and they took it upon themselves to begin a contest called “Jar Wars” to raise money for other clubs! The “Jar Wars” contest allowed different Model UN Committees to compete to see which one could raise the most money among themselves. Those that had raised enough to cover their Conference costs donated the funds to the UNAR in order to begin a UNAR Grant for Model UN. These students raised money by donating pocket change to support an international charity and their fellow students.
